Herbed Tofu Filet

Herbed Tofu Filet Sandwich

Herbed Tofu Filet Sandwich

This is adapted from a recipe by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau at Compassionate Cooks.  It will make four sandwiches.

  • 1 pkg tofu, sliced into eighths and then diagonally, then microwaved plain in two batches
  • 3/4 c flour
  • 1/2 c cornmeal
  • 1/2 t dried thyme
  • 1/2 t dried basil
  • 1/2 t dried oregano
  • 1/2 t ground pepper
  • salt – I’m not sure how much, maybe try 3/4 t?
  • 1/2 cup soymilk
  • 1 T prepared mustard
  • canola oil for frying

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.  Mix the dry ingredients in a shallow pan.  Mix the soymilk and mustard in a second pan.  Dredge the microwaved tofu in the soymilk and then the flour mix, then fry until golden brown.

Colleen suggests this goes well with Tartar Sauce, which is just vegan mayo + relish.  Also she suggests you can just serve them for as an entree with tartar sauce to dip.

BBQ Sauce or mustard is good on them too.

hmmm, i still haven’t had luck with cooking tofu yet, but i have a block in my freezer. think i will use it for this recipe! thanks…

Frozen tofu will taste different (texture) – I don’t like it as much as microwaved. I never tried microwaving thawed tofu – might be redundant. But good luck!

Wow. This looks really good!!! I’ve never tried microwaving tofu. I always just press it for as long as possible under a cast-iron skillet and that usually gives it a good texture. I’ll definitely give it and the recipe a try!

I don’t have the patience or foresight for pressing, but I’d be interested to know how it compares with microwaving. Maybe people who plan ahead get the same results as me.

made these last night and they were delish! this is now my favorite way (so far) to have tofu. we fried them up and had with tartar sauce, rice, and sauteed carrots.
i just squeezed the thawed tofu, and i squeezed it HARD! i skipped the microwave and it was fine. had leftovers today with lunch with some yellow mustard. i microwaved the leftovers… good stuff! will be blogging about soon.

Yay! Glad it worked for you, and with the frozen technique. Thanks for letting me know.
